Click to Reveal: Blurred Images by Default
When this option is enabled, every image sent inside the chat — whether uploaded from a device or picked from the GIF/image search — is displayed blurred by default. Users simply click on the image to reveal it.
It is a small interaction, but it changes the whole feel of image sharing inside a chat room: nothing is forced onto the screen, and every user chooses, image by image, what they actually want to see.
Why Blur Images Until Clicked?
Public and semi-public chat rooms receive a constant stream of shared images. Not all of them are appropriate for every audience, every moment, or every screen — a chat opened at work, in a classroom, or on a shared device is a very different context than a private one-to-one conversation.
Displaying every uploaded image instantly and at full visibility can create real problems:
- Unwanted or explicit content appearing directly on screen
- Images being visible to people standing nearby (shoulder surfing)
- Spoilers or shocking pictures shown without warning
- A chat feeling less discreet or professional in workplace or family contexts
- Data-heavy images loading and rendering immediately, even when the user does not want to see them
The clickImageToReveal option addresses all of this with a simple, familiar pattern: blur first, reveal on demand.
How It Works
Once enabled for your chat, the behavior is fully automatic:
- A user uploads or shares an image in the chat
- The image appears in the message stream heavily blurred, with a small icon over it
- Any user who wants to see it simply clicks on the blurred thumbnail
- The image is instantly revealed in place, in full clarity
- Clicking the (now revealed) image again opens it full-screen in the lightbox, exactly as before
No image is ever removed or blocked — it is only hidden behind a blur until someone actively chooses to look. Every user in the room makes that choice independently for themselves.
A Privacy Feature, Not a Moderation Filter
It is worth pointing out how this new option differs from HTML5 Chat’s existing image_approved_before_showing moderation feature.

The feature is a simple checkbox, disabled by default. Administrators can turn it on from:

Once saved, the setting applies immediately to every image shared in the chat — no changes needed on the user side, and no extra step for the person sending the image. Only the viewer sees the blur, and only until they choose to click.
